The History of Eufaula, AL
The site along the Chattahoochee River, now modern-day Eufaula, was initially occupied by three Muscogee Creek tribes, including the Eufaulas. By the 1820s, this land was part of the Creek Indian Territory and off-limits to white settlement. However, by 1827, enough illegal white settlement had occurred that the Creeks appealed to the federal government for protection. Federal troops were sent to remove the settlers by force, an event known as the "Intruders War." The Creeks signed the Treaty of Washington in 1826, ceding most of their land in Georgia and eastern Alabama to the United States, but its terms were not fully effective until the late 1820s. The 1832 Treaty of Cusseta allowed white settlers to legally purchase land from the Creek, though it did not mandate native relocation. By 1835, white settlers had largely purchased the land, and a store led to the new settlement being named "Irwinton."
By the mid-1830s, downtown Irwinton was platted, and development was well underway. Much of its historic character has been preserved in the Seth Lore and Irwinton Historic District. In 1842 or 1843, Irwinton was renamed "Eufaula" to avoid postal confusion with nearby Irwinton, Georgia. The town was officially incorporated under the name Eufaula in 1857. Significant numbers of Jewish settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, founding a cemetery in 1845. By the late 1850s, Eufaula became a major shipping center for cargo bound for major world markets. Planning for the Montgomery and Eufaula Railroad was underway, but construction was suspended during the Civil War. Work resumed post-war, and by October 1871, the tracks reached Eufaula. In 1963, the US Army Corps of Engineers created Walter F. George Lake, reaffirming Eufaula's importance as an inland port. The early 1960s saw the establishment of a US Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team in Eufaula. In 1964, the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge was established along Lake Walter F. George to protect endangered species like the American bald eagle and the American alligator. The refuge is now a major tourist attraction.

On the side streets we enjoyed the Cajun seafood restaurant and Joe's Crab Pot. We walked the streets and it was very quaint and the trees were lit up after sunset or just before sunset.
