Dunkirk boasts a rich and diverse past dating back to its early inhabitants, the Erie people, who spoke Iroquoian languages and occupied this forested lakefront along Lake Erie until the 1600s. The Seneca Nation eventually displaced the Erie, part of the powerful Iroquois League. European-American settlement in the area began in earnest in 1826, when Chadwick Bay was demarcated and named Dunkirk, after Dunkirk in France. One of the city's first landmarks is the Dunkirk Lighthouse at Point Gratiot, built soon after settlement started and still stands today. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Dunkirk served as a minor railroad hub and steamship port on Lake Erie, facilitating both freight and passenger transport. Dunkirk has been home to the Chautauqua County Fair for over 140 years, with the fairgrounds hosting various events throughout the year. A significant employer in the late 19th century was Brooks Locomotive Works, founded in 1869 by Horatio G. Brooks. The plant built nearly 4,000 steam locomotives, earning international acclaim before merging with the American Locomotive Company in 1901. Horatio G. Brooks's home was transformed into Brooks Memorial Hospital after his daughter made a donation in 1898. Dunkirk thrived as a steel town for companies like Roebling and as a manufacturing leader with Plymouth Tube and Ralston Purina through the 1950s. Dunkirk's coal-burning Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation plant provided regional power until it was mothballed in 2016. NRG Energy acquired the plant and planned to convert it to run on natural gas. Dunkirk received international acclaim in 1946 for the Dunkirk-to-Dunkerque campaign, which was a humanitarian initiative to support its sister city in France following World War II. This initiative became a model for similar relief efforts in other US cities. Since the 1980s, Dunkirk has refocused on revitalizing its pier and fishing industry to enhance residents' quality of life and attract tourists. In 2016, the city welcomed a high-tech drug manufacturing project as part of New York State's "Buffalo Billion" investment initiative. Plan your visit today and experience the rich history, vibrant community, and scenic beauty that make Dunkirk a unique and compelling destination.
