Billerica's story unfolds in the early 1630s when Shawshin, a Praying Indian village, stood where Billerica lies today. Shawshin, now known as Shawsheen, like the river that flows through the town, was a place of beginnings. In 1638, the land along the Concord River was granted to Massachusetts Bay Governor John Winthrop and Lt. Governor Thomas Dudley. By 1652, Cambridge and Charlestown Village families had made their homes in Shawshin. The settlers, nostalgic for their English roots, named their new residence Billerica after Billericay in Essex, England, a place many of them called home before crossing the Atlantic. Officially incorporated in 1655, alongside its neighbors Chelmsford and Groton, Billerica began its journey as a colonial town. The area originally known as Billerica Plantation eventually split into the places we know today: Billerica, Bedford, Wilmington, and Tewksbury. Billerica boasts the Manning Manse, the oldest surviving homestead built in 1696. This historic residence was the home of William Manning, the author of "The Key of Liberty," a critique of Federalist policies. We LOVED the restaurant Stelios Family Restaurant on Boston Rd in North Billerica! The clam chowder was amazing! The rest of the food was yummy and large portions. The staff was so friendly. We are looking forward to eating here again when we are back in Billerica!
