The Poway center is about 1 mile southeast of Arbolitos Sports Fields.
Because of its southern and inland location, Poway has a mild climate that doesn't vary much between seasons. Still, it has optimal times to visit to avoid crowds or enjoy everything the city has to offer.
The best time to visit Poway is March through May, right before tourists arrive and while the weather is still comfortable but not too hot or cold. However, Poway goes through a “May Gray” phase, which means you shouldn't expect a ton of sunshine during your stay. The valleys also come to life with wildflowers and other foliage, providing a beautiful backdrop to the city. You can usually find a nice rate on a hotel of your choice if you book within a few days or a week of visiting Poway.
December through February is Poway's “cold season,” but in comparison to nearly everywhere else in the United States, it's definitely mild. Average temperatures range from a high in the 60s to a low in the 40s, but the low temperatures typically only happen in the early morning hours. During this time, precipitation is at its highest, so make sure to pack a raincoat on your visit. Hotel demand plummets during this time of the year, so you can often get a great deal on the hotel of your choice.
Autumn is a spectacular time to visit Poway, as the tourist season has finally died down from the summer. The average highs remain in the upper 70s with lows only in the low 60s, and the sun is consistently shining throughout the day. Because of the lull in tourism, hotels are willing to offer some great accommodations at a price you'll surely love.
If you come during the summer, expect an influx of tourists to drive up hotel rates. However, unlike much of the rest of southern California, don't expect outrageous temperatures. Typically, you can enjoy temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees. This is perfect for exploring the city on foot, taking a hike into the mountains, or heading to the beach, which is just a short drive from Poway. Make sure to book a hotel early to get your choice. Otherwise, you'll be paying far more than you had budgeted for your adventure.
If you're searching for a way to save money on your trip to Poway, take a look at the many hotels that offer discounts for specific groups or members. The Best Western is just one of those places. Offering discounts to AAA members, military personnel, and government employees, this hotel has everything you need. Each room comes with either a king bed, queen bed, or two double beds, and you'll have access to in-room features such as complimentary wireless internet, a flat-screen television with cable programming, a refrigerator, a microwave, and a soft bed that assures a good night's rest.
All guests also have access to an outdoor pool, a complimentary continental breakfast, and a picnic area to enjoy a meal with your family when the weather cooperates.
When you want top-notch accommodation without the price tag, head to the Ramada Inn. Here you can get affordable accommodations with all the extras. Choose from room arrangements such as a king bed, queen bed, or two double beds, and enjoy free Wi-Fi, cable television, a refrigerator, a microwave, and complimentary toiletries. Guest can also grab a bite to eat at the restaurant or splash away in the outdoor pool. To soothe your body after a day of hiking, go for a soak in the spa tub.
No matter where you decide to stay in Poway, you're just a few miles away from the area's top attractions. If you're an avid outdoorsman, you'd do yourself a disservice by not visiting the Mount Woodson Trail. Covering a distance of 6.6 miles round-trip and with an elevation gain of 1,800 feet, it's not for the faint of heart or the amateur hiker. Indeed, the terrain can get rather tough with a total trip time of about four hours.
Eventually, you'll reach the 3,000-foot summit of Mt. Woodson, which is the tallest mountain in the San Diego area. It also has plenty of boulders for rock climbing and bouldering as well as the famed Potato Chip Rock, which is one of the most photographed places near Poway.
On your way up to Mount Woodson, make sure to stop by Lake Poway. Originally the sole water source for the city, today it's one of the premier recreational facilities in the city. Open seven days a week, you can do a variety of activities, including fishing, picnicking, boating, and archery.
If you're looking to push your luck a bit, head to the Barona Resort & Casino in nearby Lakeside. Just 20 minutes away from Poway, this upscale casino offers thousands of slots as well as table games and poker. Once you've worked up a hunger from winning so much, head to one of the six on-site restaurants, which serve Italian cuisine, breakfast, sandwiches, steaks, and Asian fusion food. Voted as one of the top casino dining establishments, you'll never run out of things to sample and enjoy. If you're not a gambler, you can still enjoy your time here at the Barona Creek Golf Club. With rolling hills and fantastic landscapes, the course is one of the most challenging and beautiful in California.
Another outdoor option is the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Surprisingly, it's located to the north of Poway, further out from San Diego, but still offers many of the same wildlife viewings as the world-famous San Diego Zoo. This 1,800-acre park features many animals from across Africa, including antelope, rhinos, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and gorillas.
Whatever your reason for coming to Poway, you're sure to find the right accommodation, whether it's a budget-friendly hotel on the outskirts of town or a mid-range option in the heart of the city. Book your room today so you can start to plan the trip of a lifetime.
