Pinehurst, as the town is named today, got its start in 1895 when James Walker Tufts purchased his first 500 acres of land. Tufts went on to purchase an additional 5,500 acres with the intention to set up an affordable health resort. He enlisted the help of famed landscape artist Frederick Law Olmsted to design the village, which boasts a picturesque central green and curved lanes.
The project was originally called Tuftstown but quickly became known as the village of Pinehurst after Tufts' Pinehurst Resort, a renowned golf course. The village became a municipality in 1890.
Today, Pinehurst is home to a number of historic landmarks, including the golf resort, the Pinehurst Race Track, the Lloyd-Howe House, and a large portion of the central village. The village is also noted for its significance in America's golf history, as Pinehurst Resort has hosted a number of prestigious golf tournaments through its lifespan.
Whatever your reasons for visiting Pinehurst, you'll find a charming Southern town brimming with hospitality, history, and beautiful scenery. That's why it's important to find the right hotel that enables you to enjoy everything this lovely village has to offer.
