The city of Franklin Lakes was originally formed by New Jersey legislation in 1922. The area was named in honor of William Franklin, a son of Benjamin Franklin who was a steadfast loyalist and served as a Governor of New Jersey during the colonial years. The area of Franklin Lakes was originally inhabited by the Lenape Indians in the early 17th century. They kept a winter camp by what is now called Buttermilk Falls, and they also used to fish in Micharagrape Pond, which is now known as Franklin Lake.
Dutch settlers made their way westward and eventually awarded the land around the pond to Michael Hawden. Seventy years later, Franklin Township was formed and encompassed much of what is now in Bergen County. The primary livelihood of the first European settlers was farming, and the area began to fill up with home constructed from sandstone and fieldstone, some of which still stand today.
By the turn of the century, the area was a wealthy city with large estates and mansions. Many of the homes were owned by gentleman farmers who only lived in their residences during the warm summer months. Some of the most popular residences at the time included the Bartholf-Hughes House on Somerset and the Atterbury-Brockhurst home on Ewing.
The Franklin Lakes area eventually separated from Franklin Township and became incorporated as its own city. As the area became more accessible, it changed from a quiet farming community to an affluent metropolitan suburb and is now known as one of the most expensive zip codes in the U.S.
