Mountain View is a city on the southern end of the San Francisco Peninsula. The city started out as a stagecoach stop in the late 19th century and got its name for its views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Today, it's a large city with a very pedestrian-friendly downtown, and it's home to some of the largest technology companies in the world. More from this guide...

When to Visit Mountain View, CA

Summer is peak tourism time in Mountain View. Between June and August, plenty of visitors flock to the area to take in the sights and enjoy the mild weather. Average daily temperatures hover around the mid-to-upper 70s, and the area receives very little precipitation. The downside to this is that the hotels take advantage of the increase in visitors and raise their rates. If you have to take your trip to Mountain View during these months, but you're trying to stay on budget, try booking your hotel room several weeks in advance to save a little money.

If you can postpone your travels to Mountain View to September through November, you'll enjoy one of the best times to visit the area. Temperatures in September and October still average in the mid-70s, and in November they only drop to the mid-to-upper 60s. There's still plenty of sunshine to enjoy outdoor activities, but since the summer tourist rush is over, hotels will drop rates and you can get some great deals.

If you don't mind chilly temperatures, you can also find good hotel deals between December and February. With temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s, you'll need to pack warmer clothes. These are also some of the wettest months in Mountain View, so make sure you pack a raincoat.

Visiting between March and May means you can beat the tourist rush. With temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s, you'll enjoy mild weather, and hotels haven't raised prices yet. While the temperatures may keep you from taking a swim, they're more than comfortable for exploring the city on foot.

'The problem with the education system is that it's not cheap. Look at our mountains and seas “ they don't care about our money! Why should a child's prospects of education be decided by financial capabilities?

Salman Khan, a noted modern educationalist who uses internet based channels like YouTube to educate millions of students around the world, thus expressed his angst at the present education system “ not only in the United States, but the whole world in general.

Mr Khan also happens to be one of the most famous residents of Mountain View, CA “ a city that is known for its firebrand thinkers and equally cool, serene mountains.

The city has got its name from the fact that it overlooks the enchanting mountain range of Santa Cruz Mountains. While the city is often counted in the San Fernando Bay Area, it makes more sense to consider the presence of Mountain View on its own, particularly because it's nothing like its counterparts in the Bay Area (San Francisco, for example).

The city is known to have been set up by Spanish missionaries, the names of whom are still familiar to residents through streets, highways, suburbs and municipal areas named after them. Growing in population, wealth and prosperity gradually over the years, Mountain View turned out to be a famous rendezvous for families wandering westward during the Great Depression of the 1930's.

Today's Mountain View is much different, though. It is an integral part of the ˜Silicon Valley' that has shaped up much of technological front that we are so used to today. With over 100 large-scale IT and Internet Companies setting up their bases in Mountain View, it's only to be expected that Mountain View is aptly called as the ˜Tech City of the Wild West'.

Finding Budget Hotels in Mountain View

The very reason for the prominence and ascendance of Mountain View up the scale of tourism in the area has also turned out to be a bane for tourists. Because of high-paying jobs in the IT sector, the whole city has seen a sort of makeover in last two decades, making it an adept city, capable of competing with the best in terms of infrastructure and public transport. This further led to a local bout in inflation that has permanently place real estate prices in Mountain View beyond the reach of ordinary people.

This fact does not bode well for the hospitality industry, as cheap hotels are usually their biggest draw, and losing out on the revenue that could potentially have been generated by more such cheap hotels is certainly not how the industry would have like to go about it.

But it is what it is. Available affordable hotels in Mountain View include: County Inn, America's Bets Value Inn, Red Roof Inn, and Highway 8 Inn.

Seeking Luxury? Mountain View Luxury Hotels are Here!

In a city like Mountain View where business thrives alongside beautiful natural attractions and quiet weekend gateaways, it would be a surprise not to find a host of luxury resorts that cater to every demand of their wealthy patrons!

Mountain View surely does not disappoint when it comes to this front. Luxury Mountain View hotels, however, are bound to be more expensive than the comparable ones in other parts of the world “ again, thanks to sky-high real estate prices in this part of America.

Hampton Inn & Suites is, from what our intensive research into the matter goes to show, is the best choice of a luxury hotel in Mountain View. It is, no doubt, an expensive resort with nightly prices, at times, touching $400 mark “ but then again, you can't put a price tag on luxury now, can you?

Hilton Garden Inn is a good alternative to Hampton Inn & Suites, particularly because it's less expensive.

Independent and Boutique Hotels in Mountain View

Apart from a host of traditional hotel and resort establishments, Mountain View is home to many alternative lodging options as well.

Particularly in the suburbs of the city, you can find many studio apartment rentals that can be quite cost effective if you are planning to stay for long periods of time. Also, the added advantage of flexibility means that you will feel much at home!

Various cottages, cabins-in-the-woods and holiday rentals can be found, especially during summer month. The problem with these options is that their prices are not regulated, and you never know whether you are paying a fair price or just a random value off the top of owner's head.

That apart, independent and boutique hotels in Mountain View are certainly worth giving a try.

Sightseeing in Mountain View: The Very Best of California

  • Castro Street is a popular district in Mountain View that is most widely known for its shopping centers and local flavor of delectable Californian food.
  • Google HQ is the place to check out while you are in Mountain View. There's a whole lot to see here if you wish to know how Google operates and how it reached the place where it is today.
  • Computer History Museum is another highlight of average sightseeing itineraries around Mountain View. Those who are interested in computers, semi-conductors, diodes, triodes, processors and programming should rather see nothing else in Mountain View but this museum.
  • Shoreline Trail is a wildlife refuge and a hiking trail that attracts thousands of tourists and adventure seekers from across America. It provides a pleasant touch of nature to the whole ˜digital' tourism of Mountain View.

How to Get Around in Mountain View

Getting around in Mountain View is much too easy if you wish to avail the public transport system. Buses “ both state owned by privately operated “ make it very convenient for tourists to hop between sights without spending too much of money.

Tourists can also explore the option of renting bicycles or cars for the duration of their stay. Mountain View promotes green tourism, and hence, tourists can avail free bike rides as long as they have valid proof of identity.
