The Wytheville center point is approximately the area of Wythe County Community Hosp and 1 mile south of Us Marine Corp Recruiting.
Wytheville offers plenty to entertain you any time of year. Avid hikers will brave the heights in the winter, but it does get cold due to the higher elevation, so you'll need to gear up if you plan to be in the outdoors in the off-season. Most people visit Wytheville in the warmer months, from spring to autumn. Spring is still chilly, and the leaves and blooms come later due to the mountainous climate, so you may wish to visit in late March through April if you plan to hike or bike.
If you are traveling with kids for spring holidays, check out the Village Egg Hunt around Easter. The Chautauqua Festival draws in literary lovers in June, with a Fourth of July celebration the following month. The area's trails also attract fitness fanatics for the Wolf 5K in April and the New River Trail Challenge and Family Fest in September. The latter's main event is the triathlon, but the rest of the family will enjoy food, music, and activities during this weekend. Fall winds down with a few heritage festival days, flea markets, and haunted mansion events leading into Halloween.
Summertime is the perfect time to visit if you are embarking on a tour of the area's wineries, including West Wind Farm Vineyard and Winery, which offers tasting tours on a scenic hilltop. Enjoy a wine dinner and check their calendar for music events in season. Rural Retreat Winery and Vineyards is also a great option for rainy days, as the facility exhibits local artworks in its two historic buildings.
Reserve a table at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre any time of year, which boasts a schedule of “all musicals, all the time.” There's always something to do in Wytheville. Just be sure to book your hotel stay with all these events in mind to ensure you get the best rate in advance and secure lodging before hotels completely book.
If you're traveling to Fort Chiswell or the Marines Recruiting Center on military or government business, you'll be able to get a discounted rate at Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Wytheville, Virginia. This roadside hotel off I-81 is convenient but also very comfortable. It's a great hotel option for large groups, senior citizens, and AAA members too, offering very competitive rates and discounts.
The suites are generously sized and include desks, free Wi-Fi connectivity, and perks like in-room coffee makers and hairdryers. The indoor pool and fitness center are also popular amenities to enjoy during your stay. Downstairs, the free breakfast is a favorite for guests, who love the variety of offerings and free coffee beverages. In fact, coffee and tea are always on hand in the lobby, even outside of breakfast hours.
Ever the crossroads, Wytheville is a favorite stopover for those traveling major interstates. If you are headed to Pennsylvania, Ohio, or down south, it makes perfect sense to stop over at the Comfort Suites Wytheville. This roadside hotel offers a very comfortable night's sleep for families, with a pull-out sofa bed in each room to accommodate larger families. A microwave, fridge, and in-room coffee maker add to the convenience.
During your stay, however brief, be sure to soak your road-weary muscles in the hotel's spa tub or take a dip in its indoor pool. It's also a good way to let kids get rid of excess energy after being cooped up in a car all day. You can also get in a quick workout at Comfort Suites' fitness center. If you need to do a load of laundry, the hotel has a washer and dryer in its laundry facilities.
In the morning, fill up on the hot breakfast buffet, which serves up hot waffles, eggs, breakfast meats, and pastries, plus coffee, tea, and juices. For those who are in a big hurry, Comfort Suites offers a grab-and-go breakfast bag.
You can experience all of Wytheville's history with an audio walking tour of the Wytheville Historic District, courtesy of the Heritage Preservation Center. The Historic District encompasses 245 buildings in total. Stop in at the Haller-Gibboney Rock House Museum, built in 1822. This late-Federal style estate was the home of Wytheville's first resident physician and was later used as a Civil War hospital.
Former first lady Edith Bolling Wilson also hailed from Wytheville, Virginia, and you can learn more about the incredible life of this Appalachian-born first lady at the Edith Bolling Wilson Museum. Mrs. Bolling Wilson claims more impact than perhaps any first lady in U.S. history. When President Woodrow Wilson had a stroke and became incapacitated in his second term, Mrs. Bolling Wilson controversially took up his duties for 17 months during World War I.
One of the smallest, most charming museums you're likely to encounter is the Great Lakes to Florida Highway Museum, a lovingly restored antique gas station with bright red pumps. This tiny museum details the town's history as a way stop on Route 21 in the 1920s.
Come for the history and hiking and stay for the shopping and family entertainment. From past to present, Wytheville, Virginia, is the gateway to Appalachia, waiting to be discovered.
