Settlement of the area began in 1733, and it was originally an agricultural community that specialized in growing flowers. Later, in the beginning of the 20th century, Secaucus became known for its pig farms. The town had around 55 pig farms that had close to 250,000 pigs, and pigs outnumbered humans 16 to one. At the time, the pig farms and rendering plants contributed to the reputation that Secaucus was one of the most odorous towns in the area. However, construction of the New Jersey Turnpike in the 1950s caused many of the farms to disappear.
