Westbank is a community located in the city of West Kelowna in British Columbia. The area has no legal borders, and you will find varying opinions on where the area begins and where it ends.
The area became settled in the early 1800s and started as a trading stop for fur traders traveling along the Old Caribou Trail. The area started with the name MacDonald's Plain up until the settlement of the International Boundary in 1848.
By 1842, MacDonald's Plain became home to the Okanagan Indian Band. Sometime during the latter half of the 19th century, the area was renamed Sunnyside by the first white female settler, Susan Allison. The area was given multiple other names over time, including Powers Flat, Westside, Hall's Landing, and finally Westbank, which became the official name in 1902. This name was solidified with the creation of a post office and multiple area schools.
The area continued to grow in the 40s and 50s with the construction of the Rose Valley Dam, bridges, and highways. Employment in the area expanded with the establishment of Gorman's Lumber and Box Company in 1951.
Today, Westbank is known as a popular suburban area with multiple amenities, including an aquatic center and museums, as well as a popular tourist region for those looking to enjoy lake activities or the nearby ski slopes.
