The Lexington center is approximately the area of Lexington Amtrak Station and 15 miles southeast of Tanglewood Park.
Residents of this Piedmont-Triad area town enjoy balmy weather almost year-round, with winter highs in the low 50s. If you are planning to play golf at Lexington Golf Club or fish at nearby High Rock Lake, you may wish to avoid visiting in the summer, when the humid weather can peak in the upper 90s. Head out on the lake or the links early in the morning to beat the heat or visit in winter, spring, or fall for cooler temperatures.
Plan a trip around The Barbecue Festival in late October, which draws in over 160,000 attendees each year, or come in April to feast on food from nearly 50 professional barbecue teams during the BBQ Capital Cook-off. Visit in the summer to enjoy Uptown Lexington Summer Strolls or Alive After Five events. The town also throws special parades for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Christmas. The Lexington Multicultural Festival takes place in May, and the Fantastic July 4th Festival wows visitors with a thrilling firework display each year.
You'll find excellent senior, AAA, and military discounts at Quality Inn Lexington, discounts on top of the hotel's already affordable rates. If you're coming into town via Amtrak for the annual Barbecue Festival, you'll also be located within just a 3-mile cab ride of the Lexington Amtrak Station. Rooms are comfortable and include efficient amenities like a fridge and microwave, as well as a coffee and tea maker.
Make free local calls anytime, visit the seasonal outdoor pool, enjoy the cable programming and free wireless internet access, and enjoy the free breakfast buffet to get the most bang for your buck during your stay.
If you're traveling with a family, the Hampton Inn Bermuda Run NC in Advance, North Carolina, is hard to beat. This recently renovated hotel will win you over with its excellent value-added amenities. After a long day on the road, let the kids loose in the indoor pool and watch them zip down the water slides while you enjoy a soak in the spa tub or relax at a table.
There's also a fitness center if you need to stretch your legs and squeeze in a workout. The kids will love visiting the arcade and game room. You'll also enjoy premium bedding, pillowtop beds, complimentary wireless internet access, and a free daily hot and cold breakfast.
Lexington is often called "the Barbecue Capital of the World," and if you're a barbecue fan, you won't want to miss the Lexington Barbecue Festival in late October or the BBQ Capital Cook-off in late April.
People literally come by the trainload for the festival. Amtrak stops at the Southern Railway Freight Depot in Lexington just once a year for the festival, with rides offered from Raleigh aboard The Piedmont or from Charlotte on The Carolinian. Expect a warm welcome upon arrival or departure thanks to the town's special hospitality suite set up in the depot for the occasion.
Once you arrive, head straight for the town specialty, slow-roasted barbecue pork, cooked over hickory wood. Numerous other entertaining events at the festival include BMX stunt shows, car shows, arts and crafts, and live music concerts on eight stages.
However, there's no need to wait for a festival to enjoy great barbecue in Lexington because the city boasts over 20 barbecue restaurants. The hickory-smoked barbecue is basted in a sauce called dip, a regional blend of vinegar, ketchup, water, salt, and other spices. Each restaurant's sauce recipe is closely guarded and can range from tangy to sweet or spicy, but the vinegar base remains a staple.
You can also tell a North Carolina barbecue sandwich by its distinctive red slaw, a combination of spiced cabbage injected with vinegar, ketchup, and black pepper, and never containing mayonnaise. Given all the tasty pig you can get around town, it's no wonder that the pig is considered an art form. Look for artisan made fiberglass "Pigs in the City” sculptures on display throughout Uptown Lexington each fall.
Come for the barbecue or the wine and stay for the friendly people and easygoing southern way of life. Once you arrive in Lexington, you may never want to leave!
