The first settlers of Lake Worth were an African American couple, Samuel and Fannie James, in 1885. In the early years of the town, it was called Jewell. When the Florida East Coast Railway started going from West Palm Beach to Miami, the town needed more development. In 1912, the city grew from 38 people in July to over 300 people by the end of the year.
