Montana has an extensive and vivid history, and there are plenty of ways to learn about it. From the state's many parks and museums to its countless historic sites. Take for example Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park. It contains the smokestack of the now-defunct Anaconda Copper Smelter, the tallest masonry structure in the world. The smelter operated from 1918 until 1980 when it was closed due to environmental concerns. The brick chimney is 555 feet (169.2 m) tall and has a diameter at the base of 76 feet (23.2 m). On top of that, the area around is beautiful, so you can peacefully stroll and get some fresh air. Your next stop might be Bannack, a short drive from Anaconda. The now ghost town was founded in 1862 as a gold-mining camp and was the first capital of the Montana Territory. Once a booming village it now stands as a reminder of the region's wild west past. Visitors can explore the abandoned buildings and get a taste of what life was like in a frontier town. Be sure to bring your camera, as there is no shortage to photo and video opportunities throughout the city. Finally, if you're searching for a memorable place to hike, camp, or enjoy the outdoors in general, check out Mt. Haggin. It has quite a wide range of wildlife, including deer, elk, and bighorn sheep, as well as many birds that can be seen in the area, such as eagles and hawks. The views from the top of the mountain are absolutely stunning. So whether you're interested in exploring Montana's history or getting out into nature, there's something for everyone here.
