If you want to visit Pennsylvania at its most beautiful, aim for an autumn vacation. You'll get to see the colors change in the trees and other foliage, and the crisp air will prove invigorating when you want to take a hike through the wilderness or a stroll through the downtown district. Just make sure to pack plenty of light layers so you can respond to any change in temperature without discomfort.
Spring offers similar weather, but you might encounter a storm or two during your visit. Additionally, if you're not native to Pennsylvania, the different pollen and other irritants can wreak havoc on your allergies, so take that into consideration. However, you might experience warmer weather if you visit near the end of springtime.
Summers get a little warm in Chambersburg, but not unbearably so. This is peak tourist season for the area, so you'll have to battle other travelers for the best hotel rooms as well as for seats at local restaurants. You'll also see a spike in hotel prices because of the tourist influx, so prepare to part with a few extra dollars if you visit during this time of year.
Winters get cold and icy, so avoid them if you're sensitive to cooler weather. Some tourist attractions close during the winter, so you might not have as many entertainment opportunities. However, if you're charmed by snow and you enjoy seeing your breath in the air, you'll get great deals on local hotels and you'll mingle with locals rather than tourists.
Several hotels in Chambersburg offer between 5 and 15 percent discounts for AAA members, including the Super 8 Chambersburg/Scotland Area, the Comfort Inn Chambersburg, the Hampton Inn Chambersburg Pa, and the Clarion Inn. If you stay at the well-reviewed Fairfield Inn by Marriott Chambersburg and you're a senior citizen, you can expect to receive up to 10 percent off your total hotel bill. You just need your identification when you check in to your room. Other hotels offer seasonal discounts, so check around before you book your stay. You can also save money with many establishments if you book multiple rooms at the same time or if you make your reservations in advance.

The Clarion Inn is another high-value choice in Chambersburg. There's an indoor heated pool and free wireless internet access, and each room comes with a balcony. Plus, you'll get a free breakfast every morning, which includes hot items, and this is a pet-friendly hotel, so feel free to bring the family pooch. The rooms are slightly dated in decor, but still clean and spacious. You'll like the large work desk, which comes with an ergonomic chair for your comfort, and the armchair where you can settle in with a good book or chat with traveling companions.
You don't want to leave Chambersburg without visiting the Old Jail. It's a local institution and dates back to 1818. You'll see the notes and observations the prisoners etched on the walls in their cells, and there's a dozen where guards used to shackle prisoners who stepped out of line. There's also a museum with historical artifacts, and if you want to learn more about the building, consider taking part in the guided tour.
The Capitol Theatre Center is another great place to experience local culture. You can get tickets for musical performances, comedy acts, and other events. Alternatively, schedule a trip to the Tuscarora Mountain Winery. You can take a tour of the facility and participate in wine tasting. It's more laid-back than most wineries and specializes in the fruity varieties.
Finally, stop by Jim's Farmers Market. It's an excellent spot to pick up trinkets, souvenirs, and fresh fruits and vegetables. It's open on the weekends and often attracts big crowds, so consider arriving early to get the best deals.
