The territory that would eventually become Clark originally was a plat of several early villages. The Robinson Plantation House and The Squire Hartshorne House, structures from the 17th century, harken to that era. Clark was incorporated as a township in 1864 and named for Abraham Clark, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Portions of Clark Township became Cranford Township in 1871 and Winfield Township in 1941.
