The Dover center is around the area of Biggs Museum of American Arts and the area of Wesley College.
Dover has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and moderately cold winters. The best times to visit fall between April and November, when high temperatures range from the mid-60s in spring and fall to the mid-80s in summer. Hotel rates are highest in the summer, so book early if you're traveling during this time.
You could get lower rates by traveling in early spring and late fall, when highs are in the 50s and 60s. Winter hotel rates are the lowest of the year, so if you don't mind temps in the mid-40s with average lows slightly below freezing, you could save big.
Dover is known for the Dover International Speedway, which hosts two NASCAR events each year, one in late spring and the other in early fall, as well as other racing events. If you plan to see one of these NASCAR races, you'll want to make a reservation far in advance.

Dover has many fascinating museums, including a historic museum complex. The Delaware State Museum Buildings, also known as the Old Presbyterian Church Complex, is comprised of four buildings: the Old Presbyterian Church from 1790, a brick chapel from 1880, a brick gas plant office building, and the Georgian-style Eldridge Reeves Johnson Memorial Building.
The Eldridge Reeves building contains the Johnson Victrola Museum in honor of Eldridge R. Johnson, founder of the Victor Talking Machine Company. Francis Barraud's original oil painting of Nipper, the famous dog listening to "His Master's Voice," is on display. The complex is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Biggs Museum of American Art is in historic downtown Dover and houses an extensive collection of American fine and decorative arts. It was founded by Sewell C. Biggs, a University of Delaware graduate and a collector of fine art whose collection included many works by Delaware artists. The museum's permanent collection boasts the only comprehensive realistic paintings of the Delmarva Peninsula. Rotating and temporary exhibits are also featured.
