The Kahului center is approximately the area of Downtown Kahului and the area of Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
Hawaii has always been the destination for vacationers seeking warm weather during the cold months. Kahului's average winter daytime temperatures hover in the low 80s, perfect weather for birdwatching, sailing, hiking, and getting out into nature. It's perfectly warm enough to scuba dive, snorkel, windsurf, and swim, too. Hotel rates go up during the winter, and you'll find that the beaches are more crowded at that time. Those who want to spend a lot of time in the water will enjoy summer beach days in Kahului, when temperatures average in the upper 80s.
If you're a member of AAA traveling to Maui, the Maui Beach Hotel offers generous AAA discounts in addition to its enviable location. The Maui Beach Hotel lies within walking distance of Kahului landmarks like Queen Ka'ahumanu Center and Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, and it's also close to the Kahului Airport, easily accessible by the free hotel shuttle.
The Maui Beach Hotel is right on the beach, sprawling across lush grounds that include a picturesque gazebo and an outdoor pool and gardens. The idyllic setting makes it a favorite budget wedding venue, and the hotel also offers generous event space, plus an on-site restaurant and lounge.
When you're traveling with a large family or group, you can easily save money by staying in a larger space. Napili Sunset on the Beach in Lahaina is only a short drive from Kahului, and the generous accommodations you'll find here will make for a comfortable long-term or short-term stay. These beach condos offer a prime location close to Kapalua Beach, with incomparable sunset views.
The condos' layouts offer flexible sleeping arrangements, with a queen bed, two singles, and a pull-out sofa bed. There are plenty of nooks to allow privacy, from a unique loft space to a private seating area. You'll save more money during your stay by dining in. Each condo comes equipped with a full-size kitchen, including oven, full refrigerator, and freezer. You can take the party outdoors for an afternoon cookout on Napili's outdoor barbecue grills. Guests also love to watch the waves roll in from vantage points like classic lawn chairs or garden seating.
Maui's culture has historically been intertwined with sugar production. In fact, Kahului was planned as plantation workers' “dream city,” where they could finally own their own homes. Today, you can learn all about plantation life and production at the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum in nearby Pu'unene.
Maui Tropical Plantation also teaches visitors how pineapples and sugarcane are processed. You can take a tram tour of a working farm, or you can enjoy the incredible views at the five-star restaurant on site. If you're looking for a sweet treat, head to the wonderful coffee shop, which features local Kona coffee and ice cream.
If you want to really taste the sweet life in Kahului, seek out a refreshing local treat known at Tasaka Guri-Guri. This family-owned shop specializes in frozen treats called guri-guri (initially called “goodie-goodie,” a meaning and pronunciation lost in translation long ago). Guri-guri combines sherbet with frozen yogurt, which locals speculate is made from condensed milk and fruits like guava and berries, but no one knows for sure, because the recipe is a closely held secret of the Tasaka family. Kahului offers plenty of other down-home Hawaiian restaurants that will help you dine like a local during your stay.
To get a feel for what it's like to live as a local, head to the Maui Swap Meet. This weekly flea market will be a memorable experience as you mingle with locals, farmers, and artisans. You can pick up some hand-carved souvenirs, and enjoy some Maui shaved ice or sample the fresh coconut, pineapple, and mangos. You can even leave with a beautiful henna body painting. It's a relaxing and fun way to spend your Saturday morning.
Kahului, Hawaii, offers gorgeous views, memorable experiences, and lovely accommodations near some of the best landmarks. Whether you're looking to relax and meditate in a peaceful setting or try your hand at the excitement of windsurfing, you'll find yourself at home in welcoming Kahului.
Below are reviews of the city of Kahului, HI from an actual visitor's perspective.
Great!
Great restaurants, beaches, and shopping. ESPECIALLY loved Nalu restaurant!
Good location to eating, shopping and going to the movies!
Wide variety of restaurants, stores and gas stations. Nice drive to our excursions!
Loved the food trucks right by the hotel. Close proximity to airport.
Sent a few of my group back to Kahuli for the star of the Road to Hana and to visit the Pineapple Farm and the waterfall at the beginning of the Road to Hana. Most of the time was spent on the opposite coast. Everyone loved the area of Kahuli but did not spend much time in the town.
