Now that you're well-equipped, you're ready to check into your hotel and hit the beach. If you're a windsurfer, you're in luck. Ho'okipa is renowned as the best beach in the world for windsurfing. The big waves and crashing surf make for great surfing, too. If you'd rather be a spectator, the beach offers plenty of entertainment of its own. Tide pools provide views of marine creatures like sea turtles and fish.
If you're looking for a family beach day, there's no better spot than Kanaha Beach Park. You'll find everything you need here for relaxing or playing in the sand and surf, from restrooms and outdoor showers to wide-open sandy beaches that are ideal for beach volleyball. While you're here, try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding. The North Shore location offers uncrowded waters unless you count the large number of sea turtles you're liable to encounter! Paddleboard tours help newbies ease into the experience, which is made even easier with help from experienced instructors.
The sheer variety in Maui's landscape can be jaw-dropping. You can see it from the air in a chopper or charter plane, but many visitors love the adventure of the 60-mile West Maui Circle Drive. From food trucks to banana bread shops, you'll discover local Hawaiian culture and breathtaking views along the winding road. It's not a journey for the faint of heart, as the narrow country roads consist of hairpin turns and cliff drops. The suspense is worth it when you arrive at the famous Nakalele Blowhole.
Take another afternoon to ascend to the top of the Haleakala volcano on the Skyline Trail. You'll leave behind a verdant landscape on an ascent to lava rock and a crater at the volcano's 10,023-foot peak. Try to time your visit for late afternoon because visitors rave about the sunset view over Maui.
Of course, Hawaii's rich rainforests beckon visitors. You can contract with a guide to take you through the rainforests of East Maui on a guided waterfall tour. You'll go home with incredible memories and jealousy-inducing photos of you in paradise! The Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, a coastal wetlands park, is another favorite destination for eco-tourists and birdwatchers.

What can't-miss attractions does Kahului have to offer?
Maui's culture has historically been intertwined with sugar production. In fact, Kahului was planned as plantation workers' “dream city,” where they could finally own their own homes. Today, you can learn all about plantation life and production at the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum in nearby Pu'unene.
Maui Tropical Plantation also teaches visitors how pineapples and sugarcane are processed. You can take a tram tour of a working farm, or you can enjoy the incredible views at the five-star restaurant on site. If you're looking for a sweet treat, head to the wonderful coffee shop, which features local Kona coffee and ice cream.
If you want to really taste the sweet life in Kahului, seek out a refreshing local treat known at Tasaka Guri-Guri. This family-owned shop specializes in frozen treats called guri-guri (initially called “goodie-goodie,” a meaning and pronunciation lost in translation long ago). Guri-guri combines sherbet with frozen yogurt, which locals speculate is made from condensed milk and fruits like guava and berries, but no one knows for sure, because the recipe is a closely held secret of the Tasaka family. Kahului offers plenty of other down-home Hawaiian restaurants that will help you dine like a local during your stay.
To get a feel for what it's like to live as a local, head to the Maui Swap Meet. This weekly flea market will be a memorable experience as you mingle with locals, farmers, and artisans. You can pick up some hand-carved souvenirs, and enjoy some Maui shaved ice or sample the fresh coconut, pineapple, and mangos. You can even leave with a beautiful henna body painting. It's a relaxing and fun way to spend your Saturday morning.

Sent a few of my group back to Kahuli for the star of the Road to Hana and to visit the Pineapple Farm and the waterfall at the beginning of the Road to Hana. Most of the time was spent on the opposite coast. Everyone loved the area of Kahuli but did not spend much time in the town.
