In 1887, Harvey Henderson Wilcox, a landowner, submitted a map of Hollywood to the recording office in Los Angeles. The first official street was called Prospect Avenue. It was later renamed Hollywood Boulevard.
Hollywood's history moved forward with an increase in population to 500 at the turn of the century. In 1902, the Hollywood Hotel was constructed. The city had a single-track streetcar route replaced by trolley cars in 1904.
The early 1900s also saw an influx of movie makers to Los Angeles and eventually to Hollywood. In 1919 in nearby Edendale, the first studio went into production followed by another in 1911 located in Hollywood.
In 1923, the Hollywood land sign was erected as advertisement for a housing development project. It was later changed to what we see now as "HOLLYWOOD" perched perfectly on the side of the mountain.

Hollywood, CA in a nutshell
California's Hollywood needs no introduction, but it deserves no less than a stellar one. The entertainment capital of the world started it all, and placed America's productions as a standard for mainstream amusement. Millions of tourists arrive like pilgrims, almost bordering on intense fanaticism for Hollywood's promise of money, glamour, and overnight success. If the popular Hollywood sign atop Griffith Park's Mount Lee doesn't make a sufficient grand welcome, the streets of Sunset Boulevard, Melrose Avenue, and Hollywood Boulevard will surely be more than enough. Most of the classic film pioneers have relocated to Burbank's blander areas, but recent efforts for renovation have restored at least some of that bygone glitz. Hollywood's mythical status may be difficult to attain with the replacement of new malls and movie palaces, but all attempts are being pursued for the sake of the city's star-struck visitors. If you're looking for that celebrity-spawned place long pictured in your mind, there are museums that have captured scenes perfectly well. Tourists can head to the Hollywood Museum, the Kodak Theatre, Madame Tussauds Hollywood, and Red Line Behind-the-Scenes.
