If you're looking for a great vacation but want to avoid the crowds, the best time to visit is from the end of November through mid-March. When you stay in Arlington, there are things to do all around town, as well as the surrounding area. Since Washington DC is so close, many visitors choose to take the Metro or a rental car into the capitol to see the attractions there.
One of the most well-known attractions is Arlington National Cemetery. There are tours available, so you to get the history and information about the cemetery. You can find a specific grave in the cemetery or take a walking tour through the grave sites.
You can also get a guided tour of the Pentagon. These tours are conducted by military personnel, and you need reservations booked at least 14 days in advance. You can book your tour online or through your travel agent. You get to see the Hall of Heroes, which includes the names of everyone who has ever received the Medal of Honor. In addition, there are several other points of interest in the tour, including the 9/11 Memorial, the POW-MIA Corridor, and the Pentagon Center Courtyard.
Spend some time in nature at the Theodore Roosevelt Island Park. This is a 91-acre preserve that is also a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt. Take any of the two miles of foot trails or check out the 17-foot statue of President Roosevelt. If you plan and get a license, you can even go fishing in the ponds around the preserve.
If you're interested in dining and shopping, head to the Village at Shirlington. Originally, this center was built in 1944, and it has expanded through the decades. Some of the restaurants in the village include Aroma Indian Restaurant, Cheesetique, and Samuel Beckett's Irish Gastro Pub. Shops and boutiques to suit every shopping need are located around the village. You can attend any of the events located here, including Cap City's Spring Beer Festival, Shirlie's Annual Chocolate Crawl, and Wags N' Whiskers.
Arlington is home to USA's globally famous memorials and monuments but its many other facets make the city unpredictable yet amazingly fun. You surely cannot resist the charm and will go on a side trip to town when you visit the Washington area. Don't worry about gas price hikes as you can practically walk around the city. Among the popular landmarks are the Arlington House and The Robert E. Lee Memorial stationed inside the Arlington National Cemetery where prominent figures like Robert and John F. Kennedy are buried. The burial ground also gives shelter to Tomb of the Unknowns that recognizes the unknown soldiers. Other most visited sites in the neighborhood are Iwo Jima Memorial, U.S. Air Force Memorial and Fort Myer. Arlington also houses Pentagon, the globe's largest office building. The pentagon-shaped edifice is the home of the US Department of Defense. It has five floors and five ring corridors in every level. In addition, the oldest building in the city holds the Arlington Historical Museum, the only office that is open to the public without asking for a single penny. If there's one word that can describe every visit to Arlington, it will be memorable.
