Exploring the Industrial Legacy of Rockwood, TN: A Journey Through Time
Rockwood is steeped in a history that intertwines its people's resourcefulness with the land's richness. In its developing stages, Rockwood was the site of a Cherokee village led by Chief Tallentuskie, a notable figure among the Cherokee in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The city's industrial journey began when Union general John T. Wilder, who had previously managed a foundry in Indiana, recognized the potential in the iron ore and coal deposits within the Cumberland Plateau. Alongside investors from Indiana and Ohio, Wilder helped charter the Roane Iron Company on June 18, 1867. By the end of 1868, a blast furnace capable of producing 15 tons of iron daily had been established.
This furnace, fueled by coke from local coking ovens, transformed iron ore into pig iron, which was then transported to Knoxville and Chattanooga and mainly served railroad construction. Roane Iron's foray into steel in the 1880s was short-lived due to the low quality of ore from Walden Ridge, and the venture was dropped in 1889. To foster the growth of the company town and avoid the disdain of Confederate sympathizers, Wilder named it after a lesser-known investor, William O. Rockwood, despite his minimal involvement in the company.
Rockwood evolved gradually compared to the boom towns of Cardiff and Harriman. An 1890 land auction by Roane Iron, new streets, hotels, and competitive general stores helped the city withstand the economic downturn of 1893. The 20th century saw diversification with the establishment of Rockwood Mills by James Tarwater in 1905 and Rockwood Stove Works by Sewell Howard in 1916. The collapse of Roane Iron in 1929 marked a period of hardship until the Tennessee Products Corporation revived the iron works for World War II efforts, and the construction of Oak Ridge provided an additional economic uplift for the community.
