The History of the Thomasville Rose Show & Festival
The origins of the Thomasville Rose Show & Festival can be traced back to an unexpected source: vegetables. In the fall of 1920, Lilla Forrest from Boston, Georgia aimed to make a mark at the State Fair in Macon. With the support of a few friends, she created a vegetable exhibit that won first prize, earning $25. This prize money became the seed funding for what would become the first Rose Show. The inaugural Rose Show was held in 1922 at Neel's Department Store in downtown Thomasville, primarily credited to Mrs. W.M. Harris. The event was an instant hit, with roses and flowers adorning every corner of the store.
As the popularity of the Rose Show grew, it had to be relocated to larger venues such as a Buick showroom, a basketball court, and even a tobacco warehouse. By the late 1920s, the event was attracting media attention from reporters and photographers nationwide. The show expanded to include contributions from local businesses, schools, scout troops, and clubs, bringing unique and creative exhibits like Mrs. Payne Whitney's life-sized horse made entirely of flowers.
During the war years, the Rose Show was significantly scaled back, with displays at the American Legion Post and local businesses. In 1943, the show charged a 25-cent admission fee, with profits used to purchase defense bonds. The late 1940s and early 1950s brought a revival to the event, highlighted by the introduction of the Rose Parade and street dance in 1948, which signaled the commencement of the Rose Festival. In 1951, the Rose Show was dedicated to Samuel Conrad Hjort, one of the founders, who also started the rose test garden.
The 1970s introduced the children's Rose Bud parade, and by 1981, the event had moved to the Exchange Club Fairgrounds, expanding to include both a rose show and a standard flower show. Since the 1990s, the festival has grown to feature the Civic Garden Club Show, the Show and Shine Car and Truck Show, and Orchids on Parade. Now prominently located in downtown Thomasville, the Rose Show & Festival continues to evolve, offering new experiences each year as it celebrates over 100 years of tradition.
