Historically, Snowmass Village wasn't always a ski resort area, of course. The Bush Creek Valley in which the town is located was settled by several ranching families in the early twentieth century. In 1966, Bill Janss and DRC Brown helped to develop the area into a ski resort and named the area after the nearby Snowmass Valley. Snowmass opened the ski resort the next year, and Olympic medalist Stein Eriksen was hired to direct the ski school. Later in 1977, the Town of Snowmass Village was officially incorporated.
