Kill Devil Hills, NC is a great place to visit during the summer months as it offers six miles of beautiful beaches, waterfront restaurants and amazing shops. The Wright Brothers National Memorial is also located here where you can explore the history of aviation where both brothers (Orville and Wilbur) first flew and experimented with the magic of flight. Also fun for the whole family is Paradise Fun Park, which has mini golf, Go karts and arcade games and the Avalon Fishing Pier is the ideal spot to go for fishing. Be sure to not miss out on some good southern food cooking at High Cotton BBQ where they serve delicious hickory smoked pork, ribs, beef brisket, you name it! They even offer family packages and catering services for large groups. Stay in a great hotel like the Days Inn Oceanfront Wright Brothers with continental breakfast or the Ramada Plaza located near many fun attractions and feel the warmth that North Carolina offers!
Local legend has it that rum runners coming down from New England often got caught on the shoals just off Kill Devil Hills. The people living on the island at the time couldn't stand to see good spirits go to waste, so they took small skiffs out to rescue the crates of rum. What they discovered when they got the bottles back to the hilly sand dunes on the shore was the liquor inside was so bad it could “kill a devil”, and the name stuck.
Besides an interesting name, Kill Devil Hills is known for beautiful beaches and outstanding sport fishing. Both fresh and saltwater anglers will find a variety of fish in the lakes, rivers, bays, and the ocean surrounding the town. There are also plenty of great seafood restaurants in the area that prepare delectable fresh-caught seafood.
If an interesting name, beautiful beaches, and a great dinner sound good to you, there are plenty of hotels in the area for you to choose from when you visit Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
When are the best times to visit Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina?
Kill Devil Hills is far enough south to enjoy warmer weather than the rest of the country, but it can still get chilly in the winter months. Enjoy moderate temperatures from April through November with peak beach weather May through September. Fall visitors should keep in mind September and October are part of hurricane season, and North Carolina does get its fair share of hurricanes. You should keep a close eye on the weather before heading off if you are vacationing during those months.
Hotel Rates are highest in the heat of July and lowest in the winter months. Beachcombers who enjoy visiting in the low season can find great shells and treasures on virtually empty beaches and enjoy great off-season rates. If you have never walked down an empty beach, visit Kill Devil Hills in the winter for capturing beautiful scenery and collecting sea shells.
