Take a ride through central Duarte on Huntington Drive, which is also marked as Historic Route 66. Once one of the most famous highways in the United States, U.S. Route 66 was officially removed from the U.S. Highway System in 1985 after being replaced by freeways. Many Route 66 destinations dwindled and disappeared in Duarte and other cities as drivers opted for the faster route. The city puts on an annual Salute to Route 66 Parade on Huntington Drive on the third weekend in September.
The City of Hope Medical Center maintains 100 acres, a considerable amount of it devoted to space meant for the well-being of people living in and visiting Duarte. The medical campus includes a visitor center, the Spirit of Life Fountain and Sculpture, a sculpture garden, a rose garden with 20,000 roses, and a Japanese garden with a turtle habitat and a koi fish pond. Visit the Duarte Historical Society & Museum to learn more about the history of Duarte, the San Gabriel Valley, and namesake Andres Duarte. The museum, which has permanent and temporary exhibits, is open on the first and third Wednesday of each month but will also open by appointment for both groups and individuals.
The Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area in Baldwin Park covers 836 acres and features a 70-acre lake that offers fishing all year and is open for non-motorized watercraft use. Boating, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, fitness, swimming, water play, and biking opportunities are also available. You can also attend concerts, dance and theater productions, bird walks, and more.
