Austinburg is the only community in Austinburg Township. Both are named for Judge Eliphalet Austin, who laid out the community in about 1800. Austin also was a state senator from 1829 to 1831.
Austin and several others arrived in the area from Connecticut in June 1799. They built log homes, cleared land, and planted wheat. He returned to Connecticut and convinced more people to go back with him. The settlers were religious, stopping work on Sundays for sermons, prayers, and hymns. The Rev. Joseph Badger preached the first sermon in the community in 1891. A traveling missionary, he returned a few months later to organize the first Protestant Church on the Western Reserve and the second in Ohio. The congregation today is known as the First United Church of Christ of Austinburg.
After the settlers built their homes and established their church, they focused on schools. Austin set up the first sawmill in the county and was the first postmaster in the first post office. Many of the structures in the Austinburg area date back to the early 1800s.
