The Kuala Lumpur center is about the area of Petronas Philharmonic Hall and the area of Petronas Towers.

The town was established around 1857 with just a few houses at the confluences of two rivers: Sungai Gombak and Sungai Klang. This might have influenced its name, which means “muddy confluence.” The first residents were Chinese tin miners. In 1886, a rail line from Klang to Kuala Lumpur was completed resulting in a population boom from 4,500 in 1884 to over 20,000 just four years later. It was in 1896 that Kuala Lumpur was chosen as the capital city of the newly formed Federated Malay States. More from this guide...

Graph: Upcoming 20 Days of Kuala Lumpur Hotel Rates

Rates shown are nightly rates before taxes and do not necessarily reflect all Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia discounts available. The chart reflects the cheapest Kuala Lumpur hotel for each day and each star rating category.

During World War II, the city was captured by Imperial Japan and held for over 3 years, when it was surrendered to the British. In 1957, the Federation of Malaya gained independence from Britain and officially became Malaysia in 1963, with Kuala Lumpur still the capital. The city has continued to grow since then, and today over 1.6 million call this city home.

Best Time of Year to Visit Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Because of its location, the temperatures in Kuala Lumpur are consistently warm throughout the year. With its tropical rainforest climate, highs average about 90 degrees and lows settle between 60 and 70 degrees every day of the year. Many try to avoid the monsoon seasons from March to April and October to November, making the high seasons from December to January and June to August. The driest months are June and July, but realize that no matter what time of year you go, it might pour rain the whole time you're there. June is considered the driest month, but it still rains 10 days out of the month with about 4 inches of rainfall. Some visitors mention going during the wetter months and having it only rain once early in the morning, so there's no way to absolutely plan around the rain.

Because Malaysian and Singapore schools are out from mid-November through December, visitors increase during this time as well. Before planning your trip, take a look at the current school calendar for the country. If you can avoid school breaks, then you can save money on hotels as well as crowds.

Also note that many in the country observe Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Muslim year. During this time, observers fast from sunrise to sunset. The month changes from year to year, so before you head out to Kuala Lumpur, you may want to check if Ramadan falls during your trip. You may find the city a little quieter during the day, but once the sun sets, restaurants become crowded and the streets fill up with street vendors selling meals. Many restaurants will have a special Ramadan buffet at night and you'll find amazing sales at retail establishments during this time of year. If you're lucky, you may be invited into a local's home. It is common practice to invite foreigners into your home to show friendship and good will. Because Kuala Lumpur's population is not all Muslim, for the most part your trip won't be affected by Ramadan, but it is something to be aware of.
