The Overland Park center point is approximately the area of Overland Park City Center and 2 miles south of Shawnee Mission KS.
Kansas is a quirky place in many respects, including its weather patterns. Overland Park is between two climate zones, so it exists in transition. It's half humid subtropical and half humid continental. As a result, the summers are hot and humid, while the winters are cold and dry. Spring and fall enjoy the most benefit from this arrangement. In both seasons, the temperatures are generally warm enough that you can work up a sweat if you're getting active outside, but a walk around the park is pleasant. Spring tends to have more humidity, though, and autumn has that signature crispness.
What does that spell for your travel plans? That largely depends on what you want to do. Given that Overland Park is something of a golfer's paradise, thanks in particular to the presence of the Sykes Lady Golf Club and St. Andrews Golf Club, you might want to spend your holiday hitting the links. In that case, aim for late spring/early summer, or late summer/early fall. Just make sure you check the play schedule first. Room rates at those times are typically average – or lower – but if there's a tournament, then they might spike.
Otherwise, you can expect to find the highest nightly prices around the peak of summer. Proximity to Kansas City and its sports teams might lead to more expensive rates during high-stakes home games for baseball or football. Expect to find the best prices around school breaks in spring and winter. When the college coeds take off, you can take advantage of their absence.
Anytime you can get a discount, you have to grab it. A little bit goes a long way on vacation, especially when it comes to your hotel budget. Hotels in Overland Park happily honor senior citizens, veterans and active members of the military, business travelers, AAA members, and large groups. As you search for accommodation, keep an eye out for the brands that provide discounts to select groups.
As a member of AAA, for example, you can score discounts from some of the hottest hotels in the area, including the Courtyard and the Residence Inn. The Raphael in KCMO has deals for members, as well. Inquire at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, too. To potentially save even more, target hotels that already have low rates. You can score an amazing deal on a mid-range room at Candlewood Suites.
Senior citizens traveling to Overland Park can look into lower rates, as well. Microtel Inn & Suites have senior discounts, as does the Days Inn. Travelodge has an excellent reputation as a solid place to stay, plus it takes care of older travelers. Are you in the military or do you perform another type of government service? Spend your trip at the Super 8 for a double deal.
Getting the best value for your money is the aim of every holidaymaker. In Overland Park, your best bet is to focus on middle-of-the-road hotels that offer all the amenities you need to enjoy the comforts of home during your getaway. Pay attention to places that tend to offer affordable rates the entire year. Rodeway Inn is one such spot, along with TownePlace Suites. The Best Western and Drury Inn & Suites are top choices, as well.
Visitors shouldn't skip out on the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, which contains 300 acres of plants and flowers. A trip to the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center is a must, too. In addition to the Johnson County Museum, it's also home to Theatre in the Park, a local theater company, along with Kidscape, the Overland Park Historical Society, a program devoted to fine arts, and a separate art program.
Are you in the market for a kid-friendly getaway? Locals and visitors adore the Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead. The 12-acre farm is home to a variety of animals that kids and adults are welcome to interact with and learn about, but it's so much more than a petting zoo. Interactions with the birds of prey always go over big, but you shouldn't miss the butterfly gardens and make sure you take a half-hour to stroll along the nature trail. Spend time at the Kanza Native American display before heading out to the fishing pond or getting in line for a pony ride.
Before you leave, head down to the historic downtown area of Overland Park. In addition to viewing gorgeous architecture and snapping photos in front of the clocktower, you can shop at the farmer's market and stop by the carriage house. During your wanderings through the city, try to spot all the art installations that appear all over town. You won't want to miss out on those photo ops, either. There's no yellow brick road to follow, but you'll know where to go.
