5 Best Hotels near Georgia Dome - Atlanta Falcons

The dome debuted in 1992 and was the second largest stadium in the world, capacity-wise. The only stadium larger was the Pontiac Silverdome. Eventually, the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, overtook its capacity record. The Georgia Dome cost $214 million to build, which means it was one of the largest state-funded projects in Georgia's history. It could seat over 71,000 people for football and basketball games and 80,000 people for concerts. Sometimes, it would be sectioned off to seat 40,000 people for gymnastics or other events.

There are thousands of club seats within the Georgia Dome and over 170 luxury boxes, each of which could fit 16 to 24 people. There are a handful of larger boxes that can take up to 100 people. There are also four restaurants and bars, 12 escalators, and nine elevators. The dome sits on over 9 acres and is 271 feet tall and 607 feet wide. There is a floor space of 102,000 square feet.

The Georgia Dome used Astro Turf originally for football games, but changed to a new FieldTurf artificial surface in 2003. In 2008, the stadium started showing safety videos before the games using the mascot. Plans for a new stadium south of the Georgia Dome were revealed in 2010 after a major update was completed. The new stadium, called the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, broke ground in 2014, and the Falcons played their last game at the Geaorgia Dome in 2016. Once the new stadium was completed, the old dome was demolished and is now a greenspace that's often used for community events, tailgating, and other such things.

When Should People Visit the Georgia Dome?

Atlanta, Georgia, home to the Georgia Dome, is best visited from March to May if you want to catch the best weather. Visitors can enjoy the milder temperatures, and there are a lot of activities, concerts, and other events during this season as well. The summers are notoriously hot and humid, and room rates are at their highest too. To save money and enjoy cooler temperatures, December through February can be a nice time to visit. The fall brings one of the largest music festivals to the area, but there can also be weather issues since fall is hurricane season.

There can be some thunderstorms in March, but coming sometime between March and May brings the best temperatures and lots of popular outdoor events, like the Atlanta Dogwood Festival and the Atlanta Jazz Festival, among other things. Hotel and flight deals are common during this time of the year, but can spike around popular city events.

It's most popular to come to the region during the summer months, but the hot weather can drive some travelers away. The capital of the state has earned its nickname of "Hotlanta" due to the temperatures you'll encounter from June to August. The outdoor events and festivals are generally relegated to evening hours, when tempweraturea are more favorable. There can also be strong winds and heavy rains during this time of the year.

The fall months of September through November have lower prices, but there is also hurricane activity to watch out for. However, the cooler temperatures are pleasant and there are still plenty of festivals to enjoy.

The winter months of December through February, can sometimes bring ice storms, and when a little snow falls, everything shuts down because there isn't a way to remove it from the streets. Budgets are easy to accommodate over the winter, though, because hotel and air fare prices dip, but there are still plenty of things to see and do in the area.

From 1997 to 1999, it was the home court for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association. With a seating capacity of 71,250 and seven levels totaling 1.6 million square feet, the Georgia Dome covers nearly nine acres of land.

In addition to its regular seating, the Georgia Dome offers a variety of entertaining options including: • Atlanta Falcons Owners Club – members only – situated between the 40 yard lines • Falcons Landing – a free NFL theme park before regular season games • Over 160 Executive Suites each with 16-24 person capacity • Eight Super Suites each seating 57-96 people – with private restrooms, locker storage, and lounge • One Penthouse Suite

Special passes are required to access some of these areas.

This massive stadium has played host to some impressive and prestigious events including NFL Super Bowls, Final Four tournaments of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, WrestleMania XXVII, college basketball tournaments for the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference, multiple events for the 1996 Olympic games, and various college football bowl games in addition to the Georgia High School Football State Championships.
