The Inside Scoop by our Local Expert
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is known as the birthplace of America. Tourists and history buffs come from all over the country to see the city's various historical landmarks, including Independence Hall, the Betsy Ross House, and the Liberty Bell. Long known throughout the world as the very symbol of America's freedom, the Liberty Bell is located at 6th and Market Streets and welcomes visitors 365 days a year. The Liberty Bell was cast in London and is inscribed with this Bible verse: "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof." The sounding of the bell was meant to symbolize the sounding of freedom throughout young America. Even though the Liberty Bell and its yoke weigh in at well over a ton, the bell cracked upon its very first peal in 1753. Despite recasting to make it stronger, the Liberty Bell never quite lived up to its practical purpose. However, the Liberty Bell is still an historic American symbol, and its free visits attract hordes of tourists each year
