Located about 12 miles north of Mobile, Saraland is the third most populous city in Mobile County. This city has a long history that dates back to the early 19th century, when it became part of a land grant to a Spanish man called Don Diego Alvarez. Soon after they arrived in the area, the descendants of Alvarez named the new settlement Alvarez Station. Later on, the community became known as Cleveland Station. The city got its current name from C.J. DeWitt, the founder of the first post office in town. DeWitt reportedly named the community after his wife Sara.
Saraland experienced slow growth throughout the first half of the 20th century. In the 1940s and 1950s, a population and industrial boom in nearby Mobile resulted in a northward expansion that reached the small community. Despite having only 125 residents, Saraland was incorporated as a city in 1957. Within the next three years, its population increased to about 4,500.
Today, Saraland has a population of about 14,600 and a total area of 31 square miles. As one of the largest suburbs of Mobile, it's now a preferred destination for travelers who want to have convenient access to the world-class attractions and amenities in the big coastal city while experiencing the laid-back lifestyle in a small Southern community. Saraland gives you the best of both worlds.
