South Charleston, West Virginia, has many interesting destinations and activities that won't leave you bored. Start by making a stop at the South Charleston Mound, also known as the Criel Mound. It's is centered between two sacred circles, and it is theorized that the mound was constructed around 250 to 150 B.C. The base of the mound was used for a horse racing circle, and the top was leveled off so a judge's stand could be set on top to watch the race. About 50 years later, an excavation of the mound took place and burials were discovered along with artifacts. The Criel Mound is located in Staunton Park and offers the opportunity to see how an older culture honored their dead.
The South Charleston Museum and Interpretive Center seeks to educate all comers to the history of the Adena Indians who once lived on the land, artifacts and information about the Criel Mound, the industrial history of South Charleston, West Virginia, and local businesses that left their mark on the town.
