As the seat of Marshall County, Guntersville was once the location of a salt mine. John Gunter owned this mine during the early 19th century. Gunter married a local Cherokee chief's daughter, expanded his land holdings and business, and established the town of Guntersville. The community's founder is also the great-grandfather of American humorist Will Rogers. Every July, Guntersville hosts a festival in honor of Rogers.
