The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located on the site of a former sardine cannery on the Pacific Ocean shoreline. It holds 35,000 plants and animals representing 623 species. It is an important landmark with spectacular ocean life exhibits with the biggest attraction being the Orka killer whales, the largest and most powerful sea creature in the world today. For those planning to visit the area, there are a number of three and four star oceanfront properties to choose from within close proximity to not only the Monterey Bay Museum, but also the Monterey Wine Tasting Centers, Maritime Museum, the Monterey Museum of Art, and the downtown area. The Spindrift Inn is one of those properties with free breakfast, charming decor and antique furniture, complimentary wine and cheese in the evenings, wonderful views of the ocean and fireplaces featured in some of the guestrooms. Other oceanfront hotels include the Best Western Plus Victorian Inn with an old-world style, a free breakfast and a wine and cheese reception, the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa with airport shuttle service, European style accommodations, live music and free wine tasting, and the Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay offers guests on-site bicycle rentals, wine tasting, a heated pool and Jacuzzi, and high-speed internet throughout.
