"The AT&T Center is more than a landmark - it's the pulse of San Antonio's dynamic sports and entertainment scene. Don't just visit, live it."By Gabby Jones, Travel Writer
Frost Bank Center, formerly known as the AT&T Center and SBC Center, is a multifunctional indoor arena located on the east side of San Antonio, Texas. This venue is recognized as the home ground of the National Basketball Association's San Antonio Spurs. The arena can accommodate 18,418 spectators for basketball games and up to 19,000 for concerts or other events, featuring 2,018 club seats, 50 luxury suites, and 32 bathrooms.
Inaugurated in 2002 as the SBC Center, the construction of this modern arena was financed through county-issued bonds, supported by an increase in hotel occupancy and car-rental taxes and an additional $28.5 million contribution from the Spurs. The naming rights were initially acquired by SBC Communications, Inc. in a 20-year, $41 million agreement with Bexar County, the San Antonio Spurs, and the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in July 2000. Iin It was officially renamed the AT&T Center in January 2006. However, in 2021, AT&T announced that it would not renew its naming rights contract. Subsequently, on August 3, 2023, Frost Bank stepped in as the new arena sponsor, and the name change to Frost Bank Center was officially confirmed and reflected online on September 22, 2023, with the building signage currently being updated. In addition to being the home of the Spurs, the Frost Bank Center hosted the Women's National Basketball Association's San Antonio Stars from 2003 to 2017 and the American Hockey League's San Antonio Rampage from 2002 to 2020.
Apart from hosting local community events and sports matches, Frost Bank Center's parking lot serves as the monthly venue for the San Antonio Sports Car Association's autocross competitions. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association annually holds the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and an Xtreme Bulls tour event at the center each February, causing the resident Spurs and Rampage teams to undertake extended road trips, a period known as the "Rodeo Road Trip". In August 2009, the Professional Bull Riders brought their Built Ford Tough Series to the arena, a change from its previous location at the Alamodome. Since May 2013, the annual Bud Light River City Rockfest has been held at the venue. On October 1, 2016, the Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions occurred at the Frost Bank Center. The platform has also welcomed several WWE events, including episodes of WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown, and pay-per-view events like Royal Rumble (2007), TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs (2009), Vengeance (2011), and Hell in a Cell (2018). UFC has also held several fights at the arena, such as UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs. Stephens (June 28, 2014), UFC on ESPN: dos Anjos vs. Edwards (July 20, 2019), which set a record for most decisions in a row on one fight card, and UFC on ESPN: Vera vs. Sandhagen (March 25, 2023). The English rock band Black Sabbath played their final US show at the venue on November 12, 2016. The arena also hosted its first Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live event on July 27 & 28, 2019.
