The Inside Scoop by our Local Expert
The eye-catching, delightfully engaging host to San Francisco's downtown South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood is the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). Designed by Mario Botta and unveiled in 1995, an enormous oculus skylight bursts forth from the Museum's geometric redbrick facade, drawing natural light and visitors in. Once inside, the striking staircase tempts you into the gallery spaces. There you will discover changing presentations from SFMOMA's over 26,000-piece, internationally recognized collection (Ansel Adams, Marcel Duchamp, Henri Matisse, Eliot Noyes) and eclectic visiting installations. SFMOMA's mission is to engage, and their regular and varied programming - film screenings, family-friendly and student tours, live performances, book signings, artist and curator talks - make art accessible to all. While there, marvel at the San Francisco skyline from the Museum's Rooftop Garden, enjoy fresh, local ingredients and organic produce in Caffè Museo and treat yourself to a modern art memento at the MuseumStore.
