The Legendary History of Daytona International Speedway: A NASCAR Icon
William "Bill" France Sr., the founder of NASCAR, constructed the track in 1959, replacing the Daytona Beach Road Course. The banked design allowed for higher speeds and improved spectator views. Lights were added in 1998, making it the third-largest outdoor sports facility with lighting. Renovations have occurred four times, notably the infield in 2004 and repaving in 1978 and 2010. The speedway is 60 miles north of Orlando. In 1959 the Father Lopez Green Wave held several football games at the track in the school's first football program. In 1974 and 1975, the track hosted four college football games with the Bethune–Cookman Wildcats of Daytona. In 2014 track president Joie Chitwood sought to bring football back. Daytona International Speedway has hosted the Daytona 500, NASCAR's most prominent race and season opener. Its primary tri-oval is 2.500 mi (4.023 km) long, a 3.560 mi (5.729 km) sports car course, a 2.950 mi (4.748 km) motorcycle course, and a 1,320 ft (400 m) karting/motorcycle flat-track.
