Madison Station experienced extensive damage during the Civil War, following the siege of Jackson from July 18-22. Maj. Gen. Stephen D. Lee focused his command in the station in February 1864. He was later appointed as the first president of Mississippi State College, which became Mississippi State University. Following the end of the Civil War, the Madison Land Company encouraged those in other areas to move to the South. The population grew drastically, and Madison today includes 13.5 square miles or land and 0.2 square miles of water.
