The History of Sugarloaf, FL
There are two possible versions of where the name Sugarloaf Island comes from. One says that it was named after an Indian Mound on the east side of Upper Sugarloaf Key that looked like an old-fashioned loaf of sugar. The other version is based on the name of a kind of pineapple that used to be grown in the area. It is not used commercially anymore as the fruit turns out very soft and it does not travel well.
